10 Key Autumn/Winter 2021 Trends

“All kinds of beginnings. Pliability, a thawing, a reawakening. Surprisingly rapid growth. Hope, energy, and release. Lifeforce. Threshold.” That’s Ali Smith, and she’s writing about spring. But she could just as easily have been writing about autumn/winter fashion trends for 2021.

These are the sentiments that designers articulated and strove to communicate in the collections that debuted in February and early March and will begin to appear in stores in August.

The sensation of coiled energy in the fashion industry is strong after a year of lockdown, another season of digital-only shows, but with a vaccination-led route out currently being tested.

Do you have a sense of it? That desire to fling open the closet doors, pull out a dancing gown, smear on some eyeliner, and dash out the door into the night?

The pandemic may have taught us to add “facial mask, hand sanitizer” to the mental checklist that already included “keys, credit card, lipstick.”

However, judging on the autumn/winter 2021 designs, it hasn’t diminished fashion’s excitement for going “out out.”

In a meeting with Miuccia Prada following the debut of their collaborative work for Prada, Raf Simons stated, “Here is a feeling we all have about wanting to be in the world again.”

“It’s a time of transformation for everyone,” Jil Sander’s Lucie Meier stated. To be able to effect change, you must first feel empowered.”

“It’s necessary today to live again,” Hermès’ Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski said.

The message to the world is that I am convinced of the importance of designing clothing for a self-assured lady. Every one of them has a unique way of expressing feminine power.”

“It’s the radical act of having the strength to be who you are; that’s what I mean by romanticism today,” stated Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino. It’s a subjective, almost anarchic gesture that asserts one’s own individuality – just like punk.”

Their ideals showed themselves in a variety of trends, including boy-meets-girl fashion (a short skirt with a boyish blazer), crisp, dark-wash denim, and sheer romanticism.

It’s easy to read the runes of a disastrous year in the short skirts and cozy jumpers that appeared in collection after collection. Even the wisest catwalk observers, however, concur that autumn appears to be a season of craziness.

Not sure if a hot pink cropped Chanel bouclé-wool jacket fits your carefully nurtured concept of minimalism you’ve been honing over the last few years? What’s the point? It’s time to toss caution to the wind.
