Yoruba actor, Olanrewaju James Omiyinka popularly known as Baba Ijesha has finally been released from prison on bail terms.
The actor who has been in the state SCID, Panti prison since April following accusations that he raped and molested the minor foster daughter Comedienne, Adekola Adekanya a.k.a Comedian Princess has been set free on health grounds.
Recall earlier that his lawyer had appealed to the Police to release him because his health was deteriorating. His lawyer had claimed that the actor was looking abnormally lean, weak and was limping with one leg.
Due to the industrial strike by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), courts have been shut and many cases adjourned. The ongoing strike had made it impossible for the actor to be trialed in court. And based on the recommendation from the Director of Prosecution, the police were advised to detain him till court resumes.
Baba Ijesha was released on Monday, May 17, by a magistrate who was at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID Panti to review some cases in a bid to decongest the police facility. Due to the strike carried out by the JUSUN, magistrates were sent out to all police stations across Lagos State to listen to cases and give hearing to those arrested.
Though the actor is yet to be released since his lawyer, Adesina Ogunlana, is still trying to perfect his bail condition. According to the bail term, Baba Ijesha is required to have two sureties, one if which must be a level 10 Public Offender while the second surety must be a relation of the actor. The bail is out at N500,000 in bond.
A lawyer told FIJ that Baba Ijesha’s release on health grounds sounded more like an easy way out.
Hours after the news broke out, comedian Princess took to her Instagram page to call for Justice as she stated that she would win at the end no matter how tedious the case maybe.
