After a 17-passenger boat capsized on its route to Ikorodu from the CMS ferry terminal on Monday, one person was declared dead and 16 others were rescued.
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWALagos )’s regional manager, Sarat Braimah, verified the news to reporters.
The accident happened around 4:35 p.m., according to Braimah, and it happened 15 minutes after the boat left the CMS terminal.
“A 17-passenger boat titled ‘TEMI 3 Global’ was engaged in an accident on Sept. 27 as it departed from CMS Ferry Terminal at 4:35 pm en route Ikorodu Ferry Terminal,” according to a statement from the NIWA area manager.
“Fifteen minutes into the journey, near Adekunle Waterfront, the boat collided with an underwater impediment, breaking the hull and causing the boat to capsize.
“The National Inland Waterways Authority Search and Rescue Team, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Marine Police, fishermen, and other boat operators mobilized immediately to the scene of the incident, resulting in the rescue of 16 people alive, while one person died on the way to the hospital.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family and pray for the soul of the departed to rest in perfect peace.”
