The Special Assistant to President Buhari on Digital and New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, has explained why the President chose a Major General to replace the late General Ibrahim Attahiru, position as Chief of Army Staff.
The late COAS died in a military plane crash last Friday,May 21 alongside 10 others.
President Buhari on Thursday, May 27, appointed Major Gen. Faruk Yahaya to replace the late Attahiru.
Seeking clarification, the former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili via her Twitter handle, questioned the appointment of a Major General as the new Chief of Army Staff.
“Does this appointment of a Major General as Chief of Army Staff by @NGRPresident mean we shall lose some of our Senior Officers of the @HQNigerianArmy? I hope not”.
Seeing her tweet, Tolu responded by explaining why the President chose Yahaya.
“Only a Major General (2 Star General) could have been chosen, Ma. That’s the most senior rank available for the role. The only Lt-Gen (3-Star) in the Nigeria was the late Army COAS who sadly died in the plane crash. And the only 4-Star General is the Chief of Defence Staff”.
