The incident occurred at about 9am, two hours after the road which is usually shut between 4pm to 7am due to security concerns, was opened to commuters.

Eye witnesses told Channels Television that the insurgents mounted a roadblock around Mainok town, roughly 55 kilometers away from Maiduguri.

Upon arrival, they reportedly open fire on commuting vehicles some of which escaped, but an unlucky passenger bus drove into the hands of the terrorists who had by then mounted a checkpoint.
