Binta Balarabe Kubau was found guilty by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
On one count of cheating, Justice M. T. M. Aliyu of the Kaduna State High Court sentenced her to ten years in jail.
Binta allegedly duped Yahaya Mohammed Idris into paying N5,500,000 in August 2020 “for the acquisition of a plot located at No. C1 Block ‘PR’ on TPO 833A revised Kaduna Millennium City Mixed Commercial Layout when you claimed to be the owner,” according to the allegation.
The offense was in violation of Section 306 (a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kaduna State, 2017, and was penalized under Section 307 of the Penal Code Laws of Kaduna State, 2017.
Binta admitted to the accusation and entered a guilty plea. J. Musa, the prosecutor’s lawyer, urged the court to accept the conditions of a plea bargain agreement as the final judgment.
Sule Shu’aibu, the defendant’s lawyer, begged the court to temper justice with mercy, assuring the court that the defendant was regretful.
Binta was found guilty and condemned by Justice Aliyu, who also gave her the option of paying a fine of N200,000. Idris has already received N5,500,000 in reparation from the defendant.
Idris got into trouble when he submitted a petition to the EFCC detailing how he paid for a plot of property at Millennium City Commercial Layout.
The complainant then learned that the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) was a forgery, according to him.
